most sellers are listing their fakes as legitimate japanese antique swords, and are thus preying on the uneducated buyer interested in nihonto. If sellers sold these types of swords as japanese sword look-a-likes, there would not be as large of an issue. The problem on Ebay is misrepresentation of items. Gunto came in all different types, from legitimate handmade high quality swords, all the way down to machine pressed oil quenched pieces of junk, but i have never seen one look remotely like this piece. this sword is not japanese, and was most likely *not* captured in WW2. admittedly, he doesnt try to sell it as a really old antique sword, but his description is misleading. i could not do that myself, and I respect the craftsmen that can, so i can appreciate it within the realm of fakes, BUT:īasically, the issue here is what he is trying to sell it as. the fakes on ebay have gotten better for what they are, and this is a good example of some decent pattern welding. I can appreciate where you are coming from here. I'd check the hardness levels and the tang before trying it for any test-cutting, but as a curiosity alone the blades worth far more than any stainless crap.Dump the grip, put a decent wrapped one on and you've got a good practice weapon. I've seen more welding flaws on custom pieces costing ten times that and more. It's likely "through hardened", no sign of edge quenching, still as I said not a bad bit of pattern welding and well worth what he's asking. Sure and all, it's not authentic, and almost certainly not "16 folds"- more like 7 or 8, my best guess it's in the 200-300 layer range. Of course, I've totally eliminated any surprises that I might have in store in a year or two when I post a "fake Chinese katana" thread.but maybe we'll just forget I dunno, I think it would be fun to take one of these swords that everyone has accepted as "crap" and turn it into something cool.

I mean if the material is good and ample enough to survive reshaping, there is a potential full makeover project right there. If not, then I'll find other uses for the material, and see if other parts of the sword can be tinkered with. If it's hardenable, I might make an interesting project in the future out of it. If I get a sample taken to find out what the composition is that'd be great, but odds are it would only be convenient to harden a small area and RC hardness test it. I however am willing to look into it a little bit. There were a lot of similar welded products coming out of India not too long ago that were the same way and even had somewhat similar patterns and the photos sometimes neglected a huge cold shut that travels from mid-blade up to the tip or some other major flaw. There's a good chance that this is all mild steel/iron and cannot really be hardened.
